What attracted you to performance improvement/human performance technology/the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI)?

My journey into performance improvement and human performance technology is rooted in my sociology background, which fostered a deep passion for understanding systems and the people within them. As I transitioned into learning and development consulting, I discovered ISPI and immediately recognized how its principles aligned with my focus on creating impactful, sustainable change in organizations. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) brings exciting prospects for learning and development (L&D) professionals as those tools can support their performance. This article illustrates how AI tools can help them jumpstart scenario-based e-learning projects with drafts of characters and scenarios, brainstorm evaluation questions, and suggest sample survey items with appropriate response scales. However, L&D professionals should exercise caution before uploading data to AI systems for data analysis, and may need multiple attempts with different prompts to generate appropriate outputs when using text-to-image AI tools.

Visual learning has become an important tool in higher education, particularly in the field of management in which students need to acquire skills that will prepare them for employment after graduation. Many institutions have embraced visual learning technology as an effective pedagogy method, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way instructors deliver knowledge. The usage of video technology is particularly useful in business management programs, in which it can enhance learning opportunities. The author of this study is an assistant professor teaching graduate and undergraduate business and hospitality courses, and he has used video technology to record cooking demonstrations that illustrate management principles to undergraduate students. The approach has been well-received, and academic performance has improved. The study focuses on one example of a culinary demonstration that explains the four basic functions of management. The results reveal positive correlations between the pedagogical approach and classroom assessment performance.

Preamble:

The ISPI Academic Committee was formed earlier in the year, in June 2024, following the ISPI conference. Broadly, the ISPI Academic Committee is looking into three areas: (1) Research and Publications; (2) Case Study Competition; and (3) Academic and Corporate Organizational Membership.

One of the ongoing conversations within the Performance Improvement (PI) academic committee is the quest to find an ideal home for departments that impart formalized education and training in the field.
